On June 25th IBF world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will make the first defence of the title he took from Charles Martin at the O2 Arena.

It should be a fantastic occasion for British boxing as it gives AJ the opportunity to showcase his ability against a potentially strong opponent, before he gets the chance to take on one of the biggest names in heavyweight boxing later on in the year, which is his current plan. The current names being thrown around for his title defence are people such as Bermane Stiverne – who lost his WBC title to Deontay Wilder, Eric Molina and undefeated Dominic Breazeale.

Eddie Hearn is currently trying to help Joshua appeal more to the American market, as a couple of the broadcasters have shown an interest in his fights. This is why those 3 names have been looked at, as they are all tough American boxers who would hopefully give AJ more of a test than previous people have.

Joshua wanted to get the fight arranged for the earliest possible date so he can get back into the ring and show everyone why he is world champion. He is also aiming to get another fight this year after his title defence, with Tyson Fury looking increasingly likely to be his opponent in what would be a huge clash probably taking place at Wembley Stadium.

AJ put out a message today on social media saying:

“After speaking to my coach I wanted the closest fight possible because I’m feeling good.I can’t wait to get back in training camp and pick up where we left off. The date to put in your diary is June 25, back at The O2 for my first title defence with a jam-packed undercard. I can’t wait to be back and I’m looking forward to performing for you once again. Take care and see you guys soon.” – Anthony Joshua

I certainly can’t wait to see Joshua back in the ring again after his explosive knockout of Charles Martin and I hope Eddie Hearn can get him a good enough opponent who will actually be able to take the fight to AJ.
